Dear Fellow Law Student:
I’m very pleased to welcome you to the
University of Florida Levin College of Law! By now, you’re no doubt
aware that you’ll be working hard. What you might not realize is
that you’ll be having a tremendous amount of fun as well.
The John Marshall Bar Association (JMBA) exists to ensure
that happens. JMBA is your student bar association. For over 50 years, JMBA has provided
our law school community with social events and student services.
We are dedicated to bringing students together outside the classroom. To further that goal, we have many social events each semester. Events range from “Thirsty Third Thursday” Happy Hours, to our Spring Formal (“Barrister’s Ball”), to JMBA Field Day, and much more. JMBA members attend these events for free or at a discounted rate.
JMBA also provides student services to make your life in law school easier. Perhaps most importantly (at least, as far as your wallet is concerned) JMBA members receive a discount on text books at Wilbert’s, our local book store. JMBA also has discounts with local tailors and cleaners for all of our members. Football fans will also be glad to know that JMBA organizes the “Law School Football Block,” so you can scream yourself hoarse at Gator games surrounded by your friends (and yes, we raffle off excess tickets before each game for free). As finals draw near, you’ll want to take advantage of JMBA’s extensive outline bank to assist in your studying. JMBA also publishes and distributes The Docket, a student newsletter that gives you an opportunity to express your ideas and opinions.
Becoming a JMBA member requires one-time dues of $90.00, which entitles you to membership benefits for your entire law school career. Even if you don’t take advantage of the free or discounted socials and other services, your JMBA membership should pay for itself in one year thanks to the book discount at Wilbert’s! Of course, we hope that you’ll take advantage of all the great JMBA opportunities available to you.
In addition to becoming a JMBA member, I encourage you to run for one of our First Semester Representative positions. Serving as a representative is a great opportunity to get involved with the law school community right away.
Please do not hesitate to contact me personally at jtyger@ufl.edu if I can answer any questions you have about JMBA or law school in general. We look forward to meeting you in August and to working with you for the next three years.
Sincerely,
James Tyger
JMBA President
